Sažetak
In the beginning of this presentation I have to underline that, regardless of examination of most important Istrian published and unpublished sources (statute laws, diplomatic sources, notary records, narrative sources) from the high and late Middle Ages I could not find any mentioning of recluses in Istria during that period. Personally, I believe that there were recluses in the communes such as Rovinj, Poreč, or Pula, same as in urban settlements on the Apennine peninsula and Dalmatia of that time. The main problem in researching of the phenomenon of recluses in Istria is the lack of sources, which were partly lost during the period between the 16th and 19th and mostly taken by Italian army during the WWII. Therefore, it is no wandering that only one notary book related to private contracts is preserved from the middle and the second half of the fifteenth century. It is the book written by Poreč’s notary Anthony de Teodoris which is, because of above mentioned circumstances extremely important for our research of late medieval Istria in general. Particularly interesting are the last will written by patricians, citizens, and inhabitants of Poreč and its district. Unfortunately, I did not have time to examine the entire book. Namely, especially important is the second part of that notary book called Liber testamentorum where Anthony recorded last wills of Poreč, s inhabitants. I assume that exactly in those last will one may find some data regarding recluses in Poreč and perhaps in other Istrian urban settlements. Since now I am working on critical edition of that notary book I believe that soon I will get more exact data regarding that problem. There are also two published notary books from Buzet and Labin, but they also do not contain data concerning recluses. Interestingly enough, Statute laws of all Istrian communes also do not contain information regarding recluses. Therefore, medievalist which examine recluses in medieval Istria should take into consideration several extant books related to the communal administration, particularly those belonging to the funds of curia maior civilium and preserved from the beginning of the fifteenth century. Personally, I believe that these sources may contain data related to recluses as well and casually they may help in our research of Istrian recluses in the Middle Ages. As regard to Dalmatia, sources from the Middle Ages are much better preserved than those from Istria and many of them are already published. Thus, there exist critical editions of several Zadar’s notary records from the fourteenth century, several notary books written by Dubrovnik’s notaries from the second half of the thirteenth and the beginning of the fourteenth century, several, actually oldest, notary books recorded in Trogir from the middle of the thirteenth century, Split’s notary books recorded from the middle of the fourteenth century, Kotor’s written from the end of the thirteenth century, and so on. For the purpose of this presentation that is in search for recluses I have examined all of published notary records from above mentioned communes as well as many of unpublished sources from those and some other communes.
