Nitranilic acid: a versatile ligand for design of novel coordination polymers
Nitranilic acid (2, 5-dihydroxy-3, 5-dinitroquinone, (NA)) is a quinoid compound capable of acting as a bridging bis(bidentate) ligand. However, it has been surprisingly little studied and only a few of its metal complexes have been known. We have prepared and structurally characterised five novel coordination polymers of nitranilic acid with different topologies. Compounds [Co(NA)(H2O)2]n and [Cu(NA)(H2O)2]n are isostructural and are 1D zig-zag polymers analogous to similar complexes of chloranilic acid (Fig 1a). Anionic polymer [Ag(NA)]-n crystallises as a salt with dimethylammonium cation and displays a novel 1D motive of double chains (Fig 1b). Complex [Ag2(NA)]n has a 3D network (Fig 1c). This study shows that the nitranilic acid has a great potential for design of coordination polymers or metal-organic frameworks.
