THE ROLE OF SMART PASSENGER INTERCHANGES IN THE URBAN TRANSPORT NETWORK
By increasing the population in urban areas, and in parallel with the increase in the number of motor vehicles, there are many traffic problems with which urban areas are continually facing. Inadequate transport infrastructure, reduced mobility and accessibility, increased congestion and negative environmental impacts are some of the major problems that point to the need for a systematic approach to addressing them. The lifestyle of the population in urban areas has changed drastically (and is still changing) and, therefore, the demands of the users of the urban transport system have been set very high. The concept that could be a smart answer to solving growing traffic problems is – the smart city concept. The concept of a smart city includes several crucial components that make the support of a sustainable, networked and energy-efficient city. Smart transport (efficient, attractive, sustainable and 'green') is a vital component of today's vision of the smart city. The following, which is an integral part of the above mentioned, is the realization of the smart urban infrastructure. One of the key obstacles to achieving an efficient transport (traffic) is insufficient and outdated transport infrastructure. Passenger interchanges (especially multimodal interchanges), as an essential element of the transport infrastructure, plays an extremely significant role in the development of urban environments. Due to the increase in the volume of passenger transport, this type of interchanges (terminals/hubs) is most often characterized as ''bottleneck'' in the transport network. The key step in solving the problem of overcapacity and congestion is the improvement and modernization of technology. So far traffic problems have been solved by upgrading the existing infrastructure or by completely building new ones (classic approach). By applying ITS (Intelligent transport Systems) & C-ITS (Cooperative – ITS) functionalities it is possible to significantly increase the level of performances and the quality of service on smart passenger interchanges (terminals).
