QR Codes: A Gateway to Transmedia Experience in the Language Classroom
The twenty-first-century educational mediascape is reshaping the methods of foreign language (FL) teaching and learning by enabling learning-centered environments providing its inhabitants with unprecednted access to endless digital educational resources. In technology enhanced language learning (TELL) or MFL classroom environments ICT and mobile phones represent an integral part and a value-adding factor supportive of ubiquitous learning through a range of various interactive activities. Accessing a variety of media contents is possible via QR (Quick Response) codes serving as a digital link between offline and online media able to turn paper-based input into a transmedia experience. Implementing educational forms of transmedia and QR codes in FL classroom creates a dynamic learning environment, leads to better comprehension of content, adds an element of gamification to the language learning process, boosts learners' interest and creates an augmented learning experience. An increasing awareness of the importance of new media in the teaching- learning processes, educators' responsibility for its integration and the web generation's digital habits and expectations constitues the motive of this paper. QR codes have been chosen as a prosperous, practical and efficient digital tool with extensive potential for the MFL classroom providing grounds for the in- progress study on their application in educational context.
