HEALTH TOURISM IN CROATIA: HISTORY, PRESENT AND FUTURE PERSPECTIVES
highly complex. The very rapid tourism development, especially after the Second World War, emphasised the importance of the development of tourism as an economic sector characterised by new developments, trends, processes and relationships, types and forms. Tourism development in Croatia, particularly health tourism, has a history and significant time periods. Already in Roman times, the pre-tourism era, this area had developed visits, accommodation and treatment in various spas, in Varaždin, the Roman Spa, Lipik, Daruvar, Split and other. The development of modern tourism in Croatia started a hundred years ago, through health tourism that has been developed in Opatija, Hvar, Crikvenica, and various spas in the continental part of Croatia. Presently, the most successful ones are the Veli Lošinj Health Resort and Thalassotherapia which are preparing large investment cycles funded by the EU.
