Halogen-bonded cocrystals of CoCl2L2 complexes and 1, 3-diiodotetrafluorobenzene

Following previous studies on the halogen- bonded cocrystal syntheses with neutral metal-organic electron donor units containing simple inorganic ligands (Cl‒), 1 and in order to explore the halogen bonding proclivity of the chlorine atom coordinated to metal, we report the synthesis of multicomponent solids derived from Co(II) complexes (L = 1, 10- phenantroline, phen, 2, 2’-bipyridine, bpy, 2-benzoylpyridine, bzpy, 2-acetylpyridine, acpy) and a ditopic halogen bond donor, 1, 3- diiodotetrafluorobenzene (13tfib). Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that the dominant supramolecular interaction in all obtained solids is the I···Cl halogen bond between 13tfib and CoCl2L2 building blocks. In (CoCl2bzpy2)(13tfib) and (CoCl2phen2)(13tfib), where each chlorine atom is connected to one iodine atom via halogen bonding, 1D supramolecular chains can be found. On the other hand, in (CoCl2acpy2)(13tfib)2 and (CoCl2bpy2)(13tfib)2 2D supramolecular networks are present where each chlorine atom is halogenbonded with two 13tfib molecules.
