Social Circumstances and a Daily Life in the City of Zadar in the Background of the War of Crete
Based primarily on the notarial acts kept in the State Archives in Zadar, here proposed topic deals with the urban society and a daily life of its members during the War of Crete (1645–1669) in the capital of the Venetian Province of Dalmatia – the city of Zadar. Despite the fact that the urban space was not directly threatened by the Ottoman attacks, Zadar inevitably lived in the shadow of military operations present in its wider area, which to a certain extent definitely affected the life of its citizens. Taking thus into consideration both the everyday activities in the city and all its deviations caused by the war, the main aim of this research is to reconstruct the urban society of one of the most prominent Eastern Adriatic towns in total, setting it within the wider context of historical processes that were shaping the picture of the whole early modern urban Mediterranean world.
