Low-carbon development of island tourist destinations
The ever-growing demand for reducing greenhouse gases and alleviating the adverse changes in the global climate system has resulted in low-carbon development becoming a global determinant in recent years. Croatia has also adopted this stance and its islands, as the most exploited tourist areas, are increasingly turning to low-carbon development in order to minimize pollution of the environment and increase the attractiveness of this tourist destination. The authors explore the importance of a more efficient use of energy resources in the island area. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the ecological and economic effects of using renewable energy sources, with particular focus on the social effects of achieving better quality of life on the islands. To this aim, an overview of good practice on the islands of Krk and Unije is given. The aim of the paper is to point to the unsustainability of the existing model of excessive consumption of natural energy resources. The authors advocate the concept of green development of island tourist destinations.
