Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for patients with complex PTSD

Objectives: The aim of the presentation is to show the treatment structure as well as specific use of CBT techniques for the treatment of complex PTSD and to present the course of CBT treatment of the Croatian war veteran with complex PTSD. Methods: In the first part, the differences between common CBT treatment for PTSD, which is being widely used, and CBT treatment for complex PTSD will be presented. Besides reducing the core symptoms of PTSD, the treatment for complex PTSD includes: the use of emotion regulation techniques, improving relational capacities, attention and awareness, reduction of somatic distress and restructuring of dystorted beliefs. In the second part, the CBT treatment of the veteran with complex PTSD will be described, along with the applied CBT techniques. The methodology for selecting treatment goals and the design of the treatment plan will be presented. Results: Treatment outcomes using CBT with complex PTSD will be showed in a qualitative and qualitative manner, in response to the achieved treatment goals. Conclusions: Although there are numerous empirical evidence on the effectiveness of CBT techniques in treating PTSD, the complex PTSD requires more comprehensive treatment structure. The need for using different techniques is the result of differences in the PTSD symptoms described in the previous classifications, compared with the complex PTSD.
