CEUS imaging of breast mass lesions

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. Early diagnosis is important for better outcome of the disease and imaging methods have a role of utmost importance in diagnostic process as well as in treatment planning and follow-up. Breast ultrasound is one of the most widely used imaging modalities, but some breast lesions are difficult to identify as malignant or benign using B-mode view only. Other modes of ultrasound examination have proven helpful in differentiation between benign and malignant lesions, such as color-Doppler and sonoelastography, including strain and Shear- Wave elastography. Lately, Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) has been in focus of research regarding its growing clinical use for liver pathology and variety of pathologies of the kidney, testis, and small bowel. Application of CEUS in diagnosis of thyroid gland and prostate is still researched. Also, there is still no accord if it can be useful in breast cancer diagnosis although some studies show it may prove useful. The purpose of this study was to determine if contrast-enhanced ultrasound can aid in identifying malignant breast lesions.
