Wireless chloride sensing with fluorescent paper strips
Wireless chemical sensors are analytical devices that combine chemical sensing with integrated wireless data transfer. Their emergence has opened up new applications, among them wearable chemical sensing of bodily fluids. While sensors for sweat analysis can give abundant information about a person’s health status and general well-being, wireless transmission of data is absolutely necessary in such wearable systems as it preserves mobility of the user. Chloride is an important analyte and its sensing in sweat has been explored both for exercise monitoring and as a means of diagnosing cystic fibrosis. While the mechanism of chloride sensing via fluorescence quenching is well known, wireless systems based on this mechanism have not been realised.
