Stimuli-responsive solid-state emitters based on benzimidazole moiety
Photoluminescent solid-state materials are widely used in lasers, organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), data storage systems, security printing and fluorescent sensors. However, developing solid-state materials that exhibit a broad spectrum of tuneable luminescence remains a major challenge. Materials with luminescent on-off “switching” properties when exposed to external stimuli such as light, heat, chemical, electrical or mechanical stimuli are of special interest. Organic fluorophores have been intensively investigated during the last decade as solid-state emitters, but their fluorescence is often quenched due to aggregation caused quenching effect (ACQ). Recently however, aggregation induced emission phenomena (AIE) have successfully overcome quenching in the aggregated state, particularly where combined with excited-state proton transfer reactions (ESIPT). Within the group of ESIPT solid-state emitters, chromophores that emit in the red area of the electromagnetic spectrum are attracting considerable attention in functional materials.
