A View from the Frontier Zone: Roman Conquest of Illyricum
The paper discusses Roman political and military interaction with the littoral and hinterland of the Eastern Adriatic. Earlier interpretations of this interaction saw it as a continuing process of conquest starting in the later 3rd c. BC and ending with the formation of Roman provincial infrastructure in the late 1st c. BC / early 1st c. AD. This paper will examine Roman interaction with the region within a framework of system-analysis, as a functioning of an imperial frontier-zone, from its creation in the 3rd c. BC, to the final conquest in the Augustan era.
