D5.4 Final report on the validation of the management strategies for the case studies

This document provides the final report on the validation of the novel management strategies for physically coupled systems of systems that were developed in DYMASOS for five case studies. The case studies comprise a population of electric vehicles and their charging system infrastructure provided by the partner AYESA, the use of electric vehicles to fill the overnight power demand valley, an electric power distribution system provided by the partner HEP, a multi-reactor semi-batch plant for the production of surfactants provided by the partner BASF SE, and the site-wide optimization of the production of several coupled units in an integrated petrochemical production site provided by the partner INEOS in Köln. Population control algorithms that were developed in WP 1 by ETH Zürich were shown to be able to fill the overnight power consumption gap based solely on aggregated demand information. By coordinating the pricing strategies in EV charging systems, as a result of the coalitional control developed by the University of Sevilla in WP 3, the profit derived by charging managers can increase by 25%. Dynamic reconfiguration of the power distribution grid for the city of Koprivnica which was developed by the University of Zagreb can reduce the power losses in the grid by 13%. It was demonstrated by TU Dortmund that multi-reactor plants can be optimally scheduled using RTN-based models and that price-based coordination of the reaction phases of the different reactors with the goal to increase the plant-wide productivity with limited resources that are shared by the reactors is feasible. Price-based coordination was also successfully demonstrated for the coordination of 9 units that are connected by 4 networks in the petrochemical site of INEOS in Köln. The optimization algorithm was implemented in the DYMASOS Simulation and Validation Framework and connected to the information systems of the site via the Information Platform, both developed in WP 4. In summary, the project has fully reached the project goal to validate the novel hierarchical management strategies for physically coupled systems of systems for realistic simulation models of the case studies.
