The First Person Singular in Old Irish and In Old Church Slavic, and the Origins of the Insular Celtic Verbal Endings
The origin of the Old Irish 1st person singular absolute present ending -u is traced to a proto-form *-ōm, which is also the proto-form from which the OCS 1st person singular present ending developed. It is claimed that the Old Irish distinction between the absolute and the conjunct endings can be traced to a system of moods similar to the one observed in Latin, where the subjunctive is used after certain subordinating particles and conjunctions. One can therefore assume that the OIr. conjunct endings developed from the PIE secondary endings used with subjunctive.
