Comparison of the motor abilities between primary school children from two countries
Various countries with their different curriculums and therefore different physical education classes, affect their primary education pupils differently. It can be visible in the progress and results these pupils make throughout the school year and later on in their lives. The aim of this research was to determine the differences in motor abilities and morphological characteristics between primary school female pupils from Croatia and Spain. The research was conducted on a sample of 83 female pupils, of which 43 pupils from Zagreb, Croatia (7, 6±0, 5 years of age) and 40 pupils from Murcia, Spain (6, 9±0, 9 years of age). The students attended regular curriculum of physical education in the first four grades of elementary school. Morphological characteristics were measured by two anthropometrical variables, body height and body weight. Body mass index (BMI) and BMI percentiles were calculated. Measured motor abilities were speed of movement, explosive strength, flexibility and coordination. The sample of variables consisted of four motor tests: hand tapping in 15 seconds, standing long jump, sit and reach test and polygon backwards. Children were tested under the same conditions during the morning school term by trained measurers. The results are processed and presented with descriptive statistics. Normality of distribution was tested by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The statistically significant difference between the groups of respondents in measured variables was tested by the Student t-test. Based on the results it can be seen that a statistically significant differences existed in body height (p=0, 00), body weight (p=0, 02), standing long jump (p=0, 00), sit and reach test (p=0, 017), and polygon backwards (p=0, 01), in favor of Croatian children, and hand tapping (p=0, 01 in favor of Spanish children. It indicates that the globalization of the curricula’s could lead to a more connected European education with more equalized pupils that gained unique form of education.
