Regional Policy: Perspectives of the EU Cohesion Process
The notion of a special policy within the activities of the European Union which has the main goal of economic, social and territorial cohesion is extremely important as it represents the main instrument of solidarity between European States and Citizens, but as well an important tool of up-building of the European project, including its deepened and widened economic system which could be crucial for Europe’s future. In that respect, the cohesive activities include financial support for the reduction of imbalances and inequalities, for competitiveness and sustainable development, which includes also environmental and social spheres, and especially in less privileged regions and areas of the European Union. This contribution tries to explain the importance of the Cohesion Policy for European regions, and especially for its areas which experience severe economic and social problems, making them not only local or regional or even national but also European. It is obvious today that a globalized world brings new circumstances and problems, but also new solutions and opportunities, especially for regions of an elite group of countries summoned to put forward ambitious goals for a competitive, socially responsible, democratic and sustainable economy of the 21st century.
