Traffic flow analysis in software-defined networks

Traditional networks, while using stable and already proven technologies, are having more and more difficulties adopting to the new network conditions in which there is a large number of network devices. With the increasing number of the network devices, there is also increase in the number of the various technologies that are used within the network. Adaptability of the traditional networks is restrained by their architecture. Software- defined networking is new paradigm in the field of the computer networks. Main advantage of the SDN is that it breaks vertical integration by separating control logic from the network devices to the centralized entity, so called SDN controller. With the centralization of the control logic network administrator as well as all network applications have constant view of the network conditions. Other key advantage of the SDN is programmability. With this feature, network devices can be configured high-level programming languages, instead of using device specific commands. Architecture of the SDN can also be applied on the wide area networks. By introducing SD-WAN concept setting priorities on network traffic between nodes in WAN is much more simplified. This feature optimizes usage of much more expensive MPLS links. Cisco’s APIC-EM is an SDN controller which represents hybrid SDN solution for both LAN and WAN. In the APIC-EM architecture there is no OpenFlow protocol. By using its own, already implemented technologies, Cisco didn’t force its customer to change their whole network equipment. Controller has built-in applications which greatly help network administrators in managing networks. Also, controller has REST API which is used for developing new applications. This master thesis is based on the collaboration project between Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Combis d.o.o. Goal of the project was to develop application which consists of several software modules with various functions for easier network administration. For the practical part of this thesis software module for analysing network traffic flows was developed.
