Influence of box and square pass shape design on roll fatigue life

In hot rolling process, rolls with grooves are used for the production of various simple and complex profiles. The shape and dimensions of each groove can be selected within the limits of technological process of rolling. Influence of box pass shape and square pass shape on the roll fatigue life is presented. The fatigue life estimation for the rolls of 3-high-roughing mill stand with eight passes was carried out according to the fatigue life stress concept based on the local stress. Numerical analysis of the local stresses by finite element method revealed that corners of box pass groove and square pass groove are critical areas of the roll. Stress spectra in the corners of box pass groove and square pass groove were determined from numerical analysis according to pass schedule. Groove design of box and square pass was changed within technological limits and the analysis of pass shape design effects on roll fatigue life was carried out. The analysis showed that roll fatigue life for the box pass could be significantly increased by the design change within technological limits. Square pass design change is limited by technological rules and because of that fatigue life improvement is also limited.
