Why Stakeholder Theory Might be Useful for the Western Balkans Countries' Relations?

The author draws attention to the relevance of stakeholder theory for strategic management and corporate governance, while emphasizing a convergence of the corporate practices that is taking place in the globalised world of nowdays. An analysis of the academic stakeholder literature, on-line resources and available documentation within the period since the early 1980s till the present day indicates that an influence of the stakeholder theory has been on the increase significantlly during the 1990s, whereby authors incresingly question shareholders' profit maximization as the fundamental business goal and draw an attention to that that theoretical accent ought to be re- directed to the strategic benefits of stakeholder methodology and qualitative methodology. The paper includes an analysis of the key corporate codes that have been most influential globally, for they are concerned with holding the balance betwee economic and social goals, and between individual and communal goals. The following codes that include a role of stakeholders in corporate governance have been analysed: The OECD Report (1998) on „Corporate Governance: Improving Competitiveness and Access to Capital in Global Markets“, the OECD Principles of Corporate Governance (1999) and the revised OECD Principles (2004), the EU Accounts Modernization Directive (2005), and the on-line resources released by the World Bank. The lessons learned from stakeholder theory that might be useful for the implementation of the EU projects in the Western Balkans countries, the aim of which is to accommodate the region's business practices to thse of the EU are to be: 1. An evaluation research of the EU projects applied on the region ought to encompass both formative and summative evaluation focused on specific needs and goals of local and regional communities ; 2. The more one innovative project accomplishes the needs of all stakeholders in the region, the more successful an implementation of its goals will be, because consensus is a main prerequisite of cooperation.
