LEPIDIUM SATIVUM L. AS A POTENTIAL HYPERACUMULATOR OF COPPER

Lepidium sativum L. (Brassicaceae family) copper (Cu) hyperaccumulation efficiency was investigated using spectrophotometric and potentiometric method. The chemical analysis of the organic mineral substrate (HUMOKOMPOVIT H-3) has been carried out before and after the planting of L. sativum. In addition, acidity and buffer ability of the substrate, contents of the carbonate, quantity of physiological active lime, quantity of humus, contents of the exchangeable aluminium, ammonium nitrogen and phosphorus have also been determined. The concentration of Cu in the plant, determined by potentiometric and spectrophotometric methods, was found to range between 20 - 280 mg kg –1 . The Cu concentration values were higher than the limit values (30 mg kg –1 in the dry matter), suggesting that L. sativum can be used as a hypertolerant plant, or even as hyperaccumulator of copper. These results, together with organic mineral substrate characteristics (pH-values) suggest that the used substrate is suitable for plant growth and development. The amount of carbonate in the examined organic mineral substrate was negligible. The amount of ammonia nitrogen and phosphorus decreased in the organic mineral substrate after the planting. The plant used them for their growth as nutrients. The results obtained should be further investigated by applying some of the more sensitive analytical techniques such as inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy or atomic absorption spectroscopy.
