Education in Medical Informatics: The Croatian Experience
Teaching of medical informatics subject started in Croatia at the Medical School in Zagreb in 1966, and has been organized for postgraduate students, but the first more elaborated proposal for the education of health personnel in automatic data processing, as a preparatory work in introducing the computer technology into health care, appeared in 1969. An important event in the history of teaching medical informatics in Croatia has been the introduction of the first compulsory course for undergraduate medical students in 1970 at the Medical School in Zagreb. The later development followed the ideas of the known three-level scheme of the education in informatics of health personnel formulated in 1974 by Anderson, Gremy and Pages. Recent development in medical informatics education calls for new approaches in curricula design. Aware of these challenges, a restructuring of the Zagreb postgraduate study has been made.
