Optimisation of Gearboxes for Minimal Friction Losses
Some possibilities in reducing friction losses in the gearboxes are elaborated. The frictional energy produced by one pair of gears significantly depends on loading conditions, chosen gear size, basic profile, profile parameters and number of gear teeth. A gearbox whose construction is based on inadequate choice of these parameters can produce up to ten times higher friction losses than necessary. In the intention to minimise friction loses the theoretical background of the tribological aspects is discussed and general expressions that can be applied to any kind of toothing are developed. As the result of detailed analyses, optimal parameters for design of some gearboxes are recommended. Optimisation possibilities are illustrated on 10MW turbine gearbox.
