Monocyte CD44 receptor that interacts with extracellular matrix is up-regulated following myocardial infarction in rats drinking white wine

Binding of monocyte CD11b to Intercellular Adhesion Molecule 1(ICAM-1), expressed on stimulated endothelial cells, leads to firm adhesion of monocytes. After passing the endothelial barrier, monocyte CD44 receptor interacts with hyaluronate in extracellular matrix. CD44 is crucial for optimal infarct healing since it regulates postinfarction cardiac remodelling. The aim of this study was to determine the effect that consumption of white wine has to CD44 expression at CD11b positive monocytes following the myocardial infarction. CD11b and CD44 positive monocytes in the whole blood were measured using flow cytometry 24h after the myocardial infarction in male Sprague–Dawley rats that consumed white wine during 4 weeks period, and compared with water only drinking controls, sham animals (subjected to surgery without myocardial infarction) and baseline group (intact animals with no treatment). Sham animals did not differ from baseline animals in CD11b+CD44+ count, percentage and CD44+ median fluorescence intensity. Wine drinking caused dramatic differences in CD44 expression at CD11b+CD44+ monocyte subpopulation. CD44 expression was three fold increased at CD11b+CD44+ monocytes in wine drinking group compared to the group drinking only water. Considering monocyte role in creation of inflammatory microenvironment that is crucial for the recruitment of cardiac progenitor cells and repair of the injured myocardium, our result of up-regulated monocyte CD44 following myocardial infarction indicates particular contribution of white wine in cardiac repair process.
