5th Congress of Croatian Historians: Crises, conflicts and solidarity in a historical perspective, Croatian National Committee of Historical Sciences (Zagreb), Society for Croatian Historiography (Zagreb), Department of History of the University in Zadar, Zadar 5–8 October 2016

The Croatian National Committee of Historical Sciences (= CNCHS is a member of the International Committee of Historical Sciences – ICHS/ Comité International des Sciences Historiques – CISH) decided that the 5th Congress of Croatian Historians should be held in Zadar from 5 to 8 October 2016. This time the plenary topic of the Congress was Crises, conflicts and solidarity in a historical perspective – a very current and stimulating topic. The main idea was to include all aspects of history, without regard to the periods of time. As on previous occasions, the course of the Congress was organised in sections and in a plenary fashion. Besides the CNCHS, the co-organisers of the Congress were the Society for Croatian Historiography (Zagreb) and – as the host – the Department of History of the University in Zadar. The entire work of the Congress was held under the high sponsorship of the President of the Republic of Croatia Mrs Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović. The Scientific Committee of the Congress was formed as follows: Damir Agičić, Mladen Ančić, Stanko Andrić, Ante Bralić, Neven Budak, Igor Duda, Tomislav Galović, Željko Holjevac, Tvrtko Jakovina, Suzana Leček, Mirjana Matijević Sokol, Tomislav Raukar, Gordan Ravančić, Franjo Šanjek, Marko Trogrlić, Jasna Turkalj i Nenad Vekarić. The members of the Organising Committee were: Mateo Bratanić, Tomislav Galović, Branimir Janković, Marica Karakaš Obradov, Ivan Majnarić, Antun Nekić, Branko Ostajmer, Gordan Ravančić i Valentina Zovko. For better understanding, the 1st Congress of Croatian Historians was held in Zagreb in 1999/2000, the main topic being Croatian National and Political Identity and Continuity. The 2nd Congress followed after that, taking place in Pula, revising the topic Croatia and Europe – Integrations in History. The 3rd Congress of Croatian Historians sought to discuss Religion in the Social and Cultural Context of Croatian History. The Congress, co-organised by the Faculty of Humanities of the University in Split, was held in Supetar on the island of Brač in 2008. Finally, the 4th Congress of Croatian Historians entitled Freedom was held in Zagreb in 2012. As compared to the earlier gatherings, the Zadar 2016 Congress saw the most participants, the most workshops and generally the most attendants who had signed up to hear the lectures! Speaking in numbers, there were: 17 members of the Scientific Committee, 9 members of the Organising Committee, 254 speakers, 10 participants of the Student Workshop, 30 speakers in the most numerous workshop „History of the 20th century“, 25 Workshops, 2 Round Tables, 1 book presentation, 1 open lecture.
