Delamination tests of composite materials in drilling process

Composite laminates are used for erection of light constructions due to their superior properties but this material is also challenging for machining since it belongs to the group of difficult to machine materials . Machining difficulties apears due to the differences in characteristics of composite the matrix and reinforcements. Drilling process of such a structure material is an important final machining process and it has been chosen as an testing process. This paper summarizes achievements in mechanical drilling of composite laminates reported in the literature and also the own findings. Results obtained during investigations of cutting speed influence and tool geometry influence on delamination of the material and hole quality will be shown.
