THE IMPACT OF THE LOCALITY ON THE HEALTH CONDITION OF THE SWEET CHESTNUT NUT
Sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) is widespread in continental and Mediterranean climatological area. Sweet chestnut nuts is suspectable to decay due to infection of fungal diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of locality on the health condition of the sweet chestnut fruit. The three sites of different climate conditions have been selected: district Tramontana on the island Cres (Croatia), Markuševac on Medvednica (Croatia) and area Štegina at Krško (Slovenia). Samples were collected at the beginning of 10th of 2016. The samples of 200 pieces of ocular healthy chestnut fruit per site were placed in plastic bags in a refrigerator at +8°C. After 10 months, the health condition of the nuts was analysed. The sample from Tramontane had 35% of healthy fruits, the sample from Štegine had 43% of healthy fruits, while the sample from Markuševac was the healthiest with 61% of healthy fruits. The sample from Tramontana was infected with the fungi: Gnomoniopsis sp. 32.6%, Phomopsis spp. 13.65%, Penicillium spp. 7.3% and Ciborium batschiana 2.92%. The sample from Štegine was infected with the fungi: Gnomoniopsis sp. 17.0%, Ciborium batschiana 12.55%, Penicillium spp. 8.09%, and Phomopsis sp. 7.6%. The sample from Markuševac was infected with the fungi: Gnomoniopsis sp. 11.04%, Phomopsis sp. 7.36%, Ciborium batschiana 6.74% and Penicillium spp. 3.06%. The sample of sweet chestnut nuts from Markuševac was the healthiest with lower intensity of infection.
