Biological, ecological and socio-economical aspects of viticulture in Istria (Croatia)

In last mid-century in Istria were about 50.000 ha of vineyards, while today there are only 6.750 ha. Viticulture is, aside from productive aspect, important also from economical and social ones, in terms of rural population keeping on low populated areas. From these reasons, we stress vineyards planting not only on the best positions from the productive point of view but also on those close to populated areas. Autochthonous varieties of grapevines are of special importance: Borgonja, Teran, Hrvatica, Malvazija, Moscat rose of Poreč, Muscat from Momjan. Through introduction of new varieties and clones, selective and professional work on these varieties was neglected. These varieties and clones are important not only in order to preserve a genetic potential but also from a productive point of view. A long-term research is going on in order to identify a productively and genetically interesting types or clones of old grapevine varieties. It is necessary to define which genetic potentials are the most suitable for large, and particularly for specific small areas. It is in progress their morphologic defining and genetic coding, cloning and transfer in experimental and productive plantations in Istria. These new plantations will be raised respecting ecological and social aspects of viticulture and in accordance with new technological standards (engrassement, choice of the most suitable rootstocks, training systems as well as production manipulation and soil management oriented on decreasing manual human labour, environmental and human impact). Final product would be recognisable wine that would have, through consuming and marketing in rural tourism, good economic effects on whole economy. In the present paper, a scientific work performed in Istria (Croatia) on this fundamental argument is considered.
