Photophysical properties of fluorescent benzimidazo[1, 2-a]quinolines
Due to the possession of a highly conjugated planar chromophore, the benzimidazole benzannulated derivatives offer promising applications in optoelectronics, optical lasers, fluorescence probes and organic luminophores [1] besides their broad spectrum of biological activities. The fluorescence of cyclic derivatives can be significantly altered by additional substituents placed on different positions of the planar chromophore or by condensation with other heterocycles, which leads to the extension of the conjugated aromatic surface [2]. Amino substituted benzimidazo[1, 2-a]quinolines were mainly designed as fluorescence sensors to determine pH changes over a wide pH scale but also showed interesting spectroscopic characteristics studied by UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy [3]. It was noticed that the type and position of amino substituent placed at the tetracyclic skeleton, strongly influenced absorption and emission. Additionally, computational analysis complemented experimental results by elucidating pKa values of investigated systems and interpreting the observed electronic transitions of investigated systems.
