Occurences of rare-earth elements in leucite rocks near Gnjilane (Kosovo, Yugoslavia), and possibilities of their recovery
The paper presents the results of experimental investigation of ground leucite rock leaching by sulphuric acid with the aim of obtaining alaun and through it, potassium salts and alumina obtaining. The procedure consists of alaun roasting with possible addition of potassium sulphate ; alaun is first dehydrated and than thermally decomposed. Then the decomposed alaun is leached to separate soluble potassium sulphate. After the separating is done potassium sulphate obtained contained 0, 46% of alumina, and the alumina obtained contained 3, 5% of hematite and 3, 42 % of potassium sulphate. In The course of repeated investigations the contents of rare-earths in leucite rock and alaun obtained from it in the procedure described was analyzed. The positive results directed attention to the need of different approach to the problem of leucite rocks exploiting.
