Treatment of dissolved red mud slag by solvent extraction. Technological experiments
With the aim of complex utilization of red mud a process has been accomplished in Yugoslavia according to which pig iron and slag were obtained by red mud smelting. The slag obtained is leached away by sulphuric acid, and after that the undissolved part of slag is converted to synthetic fertilizer. In the first extraction cycle titanium and the minor elements, as well as the rareearths, were extracted from pregnant sulphuric acid solution by the solution of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid in kerosene and separated in re-extraction by sodium carbonate solution. In the second extraction cycle iron was extracted from already used sulphuric acid solution by the solution of di-(2-etxylhexyl) phosphoric acid in kerosene and separated in re-extraction by caustic chelate solution. This paper covers the problems refered to the second extraction cycle ; solvent treatment, conversion of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid to a salt form and stripping.
red mud smelting ; slag leaching by sulphuric acid ; extraction by D2EHPA ; re-extraction by NaOH ; ferrous product
