Determination of force coefficients for wind force calculation by Computational Fluid Dynamics

The calculation of wind load is based on estimates of wind effects, which must be taken into account in the design of structure. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) enables engineers to perform “numerical experiments” in a “virtual flow laboratory”. In this study, basic value of force coefficient which depends on the shape of cross- section is analysed using ANSYS Fluent, together with reduction factor which counts on beneficial effects of rounded edges. Simulation results for rectangular, rounded and polygonal sections are shown in teh paper and compared with Eurocodes values. It can be seen that the solutions are physically consistent and within reasonable ranges.
