Competencies in a digital environment
The technological giants of the 21st century (Apple, Google, Microsoft, Adobe, Uber…) have based their businesses on operations within a digital web environment, improving these operations every day by implementing innovations created in this same environment, which increasingly requires the use of artificial intelligence we have heard so much about lately, but still know very little although we encounter it on a daily basis. Most of the courses in various educational institutions that prepare students for jobs in an extremely dynamic web environment, have based most of their activities on traditional lecturing and testing knowledge through exams. Knowing the transformation the classic media went through in order to become digital media, which constantly has to adjust to a web environment, the traditional approach to education is no longer possible. In order to enhance the way competencies are acquired the goal of this study is to define the facts that influence the development of contemporary competencies in graphic communications, to define these competencies and determine the relationship within the Croatian and European qualifying framework. Graphic communications, and especially the field tied to web technologies, represent one of the fastest growing segments with constant demand for new human resources. The growing demand in this segment can be verified by information obtained in the eSkills for Job research, initiated by the European Commission, where the latest analytic estimates suggest that there will be a lack of almost 900.000 ICT experts in the EU until the end of 2020. The European Commission has also come to a conclusion that educational programs do not fully respond to the needs of the digital industry. In order to obtain contemporary competencies a survey has been conducted at employers in the digital industry, and the results, and the analysis will be presented in this study.
