POVIJESNI PREGLED RADIOEKOLOŠKIH ISTRAŽIVANJA NA PODRUČJU REPUBLIKE HRVATSKE

The first available documented radioecological research in Croatia can be traced back to the measurements of radioactivity in the Adriatic Sea performed in 1909 in Opatija by Peter Salcher, professor at the Austro- Hungarian Imperial and Royal Academy in Rijeka. The systematic radioecological research of fission products started in 1959, as part of an extensive monitoring program of radioactive contamination of the environment in Yugoslavia including Republic of Croatia. Radioecological research also includes activities related to the supervision of the Krško Nuclear Power Plant, which began in the 1980s, and in which the Ruđer Bošković Institute and the Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health were both involved. Today, the monitoring program of radioactive contamination of the environment in the Republic of Croatia is carried out under the supervision of the State Office for Radiological and Nuclear Safety and has been harmonized with EU practice and recommendations of the European Commission from 2000 on the application of Article 36 of the Euratom Treaty. Also, radioecological investigations on Croatian territory were the subject of numerous scientific and research projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as well as other public or private partners. Croatian researchers published numerous scientific or technical papers that are connected to radioecology. In 2009, thanks to the efforts of the Croatian Radiation Protection Association (CRPA), in the regulations on scientific and artistic areas, fields and branches, the field of Interdisciplinary natural sciences has been supplemented by the branch of Radiation science, which also includes radioecology.
