Developing Children's Critical Thinking through Picturebooks
Education is today often focused more on teaching what to think, rather than how to think. Thinking skills need to be learned just like all the others. This thesis focuses on critical thinking skills, and their importance is supported by many examples. Suggestions are given on how to stimulate children’s critical thinking skills development. The main aim of the paper is to show how the proper use of picturebooks can contribute to the overall development of children’s thinking skills. It emphasizes the importance of introducing philosophical discussion to the primary classroom. To demonstrate some of the methods that can be used when discussing picturebooks, Black and White, a metafictive picturebook by David Macaulay, is used as an example.
