Traditional Tanac Dance: A Climax of the Koleda Ritual on the Island of Krk in 2015
Following koleda customs on the Island of Krk continuously proved that the tanac dance has unique characteristics as a ritual dance. The Koleda custom consists of two parts. The first one with singing carols, collecting the gifts around the village and announcing the newly selected king after the mass in the church. The second part of the custom takes place a couple of weeks later, with the mass in the church, the ritual tanac dance, and a specially prepared dinner for all participants and special guests. The impressive feeling of the spiritual and physical homogeneousness and unity of the whole community can be experienced during the koleda. It has to be observed and interpreted as custom and ritual, and as a syncretic event in performance. Sources from the beginning of the 20th century mention that the koleda custom has not been followed every year, not even every 10 or 20 years. Analysis and interpretation is made taking the example of the tanac dance in the contemporary koleda ritual in Dubašnica in 2015.
