Académie André Lhote and Croatian Painting Between the Two World Wars

The French painter, art critic and teacher André Lhote (1885−1962) exerted a significant influence on Croatian / Yugoslavian art between the two World Wars and played a crucial role in the formation of local version of Cubism. Several artists like Sava Šumanović, Sergije Glumac, Sonja Kovačić Tajčević, Oton Postružnik, Vera Nikolić Podrinska and others attended his courses at different Paris private schools or frequented Académie André Lhote in the 1920s and became well acquainted with Lhote's method and Cubist lexicon, his stylization géométrique and analytical approach to painting. Lhote’s contribution to Croatian / Yugoslav interwar art is evident primarily through the works of his students who applied his theoretical principles, but also remained faithful to their individual artistic endeavours, thus enriching the artistic production of their homeland by implementing the aesthetic of Cubism and introducing new approach to the construction of painting.
