A Photometric Latex Test for Rheumatoid Factors
A total of 108 human sera, most of them rheumatoid, were examined for the presence of rheumatoid factors by the photometric latex test (PLT) recently developed in this laboratory. Serum titres determined by the PLT were compared with the titres obtained from the sensitized sheep cell agglutiuation test (SSC·test). The results of both tests were highly correlated. The reprodacibility of both tests was assessed. The new PLT proved to have a better coefficient of variation (the coefficient of variation of the SSC was about 30% and of the PLT about 6%). In the PLT to the TRIS buffer of high ionic strength some human serum albumin was added, preventing those nonspecific agglutinations commonly observed in the LFT and SSC tests. The PLT can easily be applied in routine serologic work and represents an improvement of existing quantitative latex agglutination tests.
