Reflections of the saintly name Anthony in Croatian anthroponymy
The personal name Anthony is widely spread throughout the entire Christian world. Today we find numerous, various reflections of this saintly name in the Croatian anthroponymic system. This paper attempts to determine the extent of the roles of foreign language influences and domestic phonological development in the creation of names such as Anta, Ante, Anto, Antun, Anton, Toni, Tonči, etc. The earliest attestations of these names are discussed, the linguistic characteristics of these attestations are analysed, and an overview of the distribution of individual attestations in the past and today across the Croatian language area is provided.
