Sedimentary record of Anthropocene in Novigradsko more, Karinsko more and Zrmanja catchment (Croatia)
A multi-proxy approach comprising of chemical analysis, particle size, magnetic susceptibility, L*a*b* spectrum, AMS 14C analysis and bulk XRD analysis was used to determine changes in four long marine sediment cores and fourteen soil sediment cores, sampled in the Zrmanja river mouth (ZRM-A), Novigradsko more (NOV-3), Karinsko more (KAR-A), Modrić bay (MOD-A), and their respective catchments. Evidence of anthropogenic changes with pronounced erosion due to deforestation in the subcatchments is evident in all marine cores as elevated magnetic susceptibility, changes in color, elevated Pb, lithogenic elements, TOC, C/N and decreased carbonates. Indicators of anthropogenic influence occur at different periods in the subcatchments due to different periods of settlement.
