Overcoming Service-Level Interoperability Challenges of the IoT
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a complex ecosystem of various IoT devices, solutions, services and applications. Many devices focus on proprietary technology and interfaces, but IoT is highly-heterogeneous, so to unleash its full value it is important to achieve interoperability among various things. Interoperability is one of the main problems of the IoT, because it is impossible to manage a vast amount of different IoT devices and their application programming interfaces (APIs) individually. The majority of the existing IoT interoperability papers elaborate on possible techniques and methods to achieve interoperability, and some show simple proof-of-concepts. Multiple IoT standards exist today and new ones are being created. Several different IoT standards are currently competing with each other, and for now there is not a wide-accepted standard. There are still many unsolved interoperability problems at different levels (data, service, net-work, application). This chapter will focus on service-level IoT interoperability problems and possible solutions. The use case of possible resolution of some interoperability problems will also be shown. In the end, possible future research problems of the IoT service-level interoperability will be identified.
