Milton’s Areopagitica: Cultural Engeneering of the Poetic Spirit

The latest trends in Milton criticism, as well as in the studies of Renaissance art and literature, focus on the material production of texts or books. While we learn from those studies a great deal about the history of the printing press and economy, very often we get the wrong impression of Milton's character and Areopagitica. Instead of paper mills and printing presses of Benjamin Franklin we hear in Milton's pamphlet the sounds of his poetic parental instinct aroused by the conception of his Paradise Lost. In Areopagitica Milton paves the way for his great poetic work as well as for the cultural environment in which it will be received. While most critics analyze Milton's pamphlet in the context of his prose works, its objective becomes clearer in the context of his Italian journey and poetic aspirations.
