Sampling and characterization of riverine suspended particulate material(SPM): the Sava river (Croatia)

Suspended particulate material (SPM) is the main carrier of many natural and anthropogenic substances transported by fluvial systems (Walling, 2005 ; Horowitz, 2008 ; Marttila et al., 2013). Obtaining representative samples of SPM is, therefore, of fundamental importance in studies concerned with quantifying geochemical fluxes and understanding water quality in fluvial systems. Sampling strategies aimed at obtaining detailed information on the properties of SPM are constrained by several factors: (I) suspended material transport is highly episodic and sampling activity should be focused on high river discharge periods ; (II) adequate sampling equipment is not always available and sampling could be costly and time-consuming ; (III) individually (daily) taken samples may not be representative of material transported during a longer period (Walling, 2008). In order to overcome these obstacles, a time-integrated sampler (TIMS), designed according to Phillips et al. (2000), was employed for SPM sampling in the Sava River. Geochemical analyses of the Sava River SPM have shown that the elemental composition of the SPM was mainly governed by its mineralogical composition and different input of particulate material during high/low river discharges. High enrichment factors revealed significant anthropogenic input of ecotoxic elements (Ni, As, Cr, Pb, Bi, Cd, Zn, Sb) to the Sava River (Vdović et al, 2016, Lučić et al., submitted). The investigation has also shown that metal concentrations could not be simply matched to the river discharge and SPM concentration - different materials are brought into the river under different flow regimes.
