Planning within the protected agricultural landscape - revitalization of rural settlement Brusje on the Hvar island

Recent social transformations led to the reorganization of the classic Mediterranean space, characterized by specific landscape systems through previous long-term development. As a result of natural and anthropogenic characteristics and processes that took place or are taking place in the area, the landscape reflects people’s former and present attitude towards their environment. That is why the comprehensive space of the City of Hvar is an exceptional example of a valuable, agricultural landscape, within which the rural village Brusje is situated. The original spatial configuration of Brusje village with the characteristic terraced house typology has been preserved due to emigration which began along with the economic stagnation in the beginning of the 20thcentury, while the surrounding landscape bears witness to former presence of viticulture in this region. In the recent years, the planned revitalization was approached through the preparation of urban plans for each of the villages, first by creating the conservation drawings and determining the main starting points and goals of spatial planning of the subject areas. The planned expansion of the existing peripheral areas, conceived by physical planning documents of the wider area, represents a special challenge of preserving the recognizable silhouettes of the villages and scales of existing structures. This paper seeks to examine the contemporary approach to the protection of rural areas and to contribute to the optimal methods for spatial development of architectural entities within especially sensitive environment of agricultural landscape, through evaluation of the existing features and recognizable structures. Using the example of the planned renovation of the rural area- the Brusje village on the Hvar island, the appropriate methods and forms for sustainable development of spatial planning have been explored, applicable with the revitalization processes of valuable landscape historical heritage.
