In the spirit of tradition, religion and moral education: book production in Dalmatia of the early 19th century
Book publishing in the Kingdom of Dalmatia, the most south-eastern land of the early 19th century Austrian Empire, situated on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, started only at the very beginning of the 19th century. It was limited to three printing and publishing centres – Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik. Compared with other European countries of the age whose annual production was expressed in thousands and witnessed the growth of secular works, book publishing in Dalmatia was quite restricted in numbers as well as in the variety of subjects and themes. The paper will show the results of the extensive research on books published in the period, made according to several criteria: the intensity of book production, the productivity of printing centres, the diversity of subjects, themes and languages, etc. The intention is to make relevant conclusions on pre-modern book production in Dalmatia and to show to what extent its complex historical destiny (Dalmatia was for more than four centuries an integral part of the Republic of Venice), language and ethno-confessional diversity (the Roman Catholics, both Croats and Italians, the Greek Orthodox, the Jews), and new political reality following the year 1814/15 when Dalmatia came into Austrian possession, influenced it. It seems that moral education and spiritual knowledge was at the time the main purpose assigned to the printed word.
