Manifesting Dispossession: Politics of the Avant- garde
The purpose of this chapter is to examine the dispossession of the self in relation to avant- garde literary projects (and manifestos). Through an act of self-foundation, manifestos demand to be regarded in view of their ability to change the world and not by their rhetorical or literary merits. Manifestos bring into the open what has been hitherto unarticulated. However, they should also be recognized as moments of actual or attempted interventions. They establish a new collectivity based on the programme they proclaim and they bring to the surface what has been hidden: dispossession (of the self) and desubjectification as a precondition and effect of being in community. This specific temporality of breaks and new beginnings, inherent in the genre of the manifesto, shall be the point of departure for the examination of the emancipatory dimensions of avant-garde artistic (literary) projects and an opportunity to explore the relation between concepts of dispossession and emancipation.
