Estimated average mercury, arsenic, lead and cadmium intake through seafood in Croatia

Except for occupationally exposed individuals, food is usually the most important source of toxic trace elements intake. As many trace elements accumulate in marine organisms, seafood is known to be the main contributor to its total dietary intake. The aim of this study was to estimate average mercury, arsenic, lead and cadmium intake through seafood in general population in Croatia. The common fresh fish and mussels caught on different locations in the Adriatic Sea were collected at the Zagreb fish market and analysed for its Hg, As, Pb and Cd mass fractions. Mercury was determined by cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry and arsenic, lead and cadmium were determined by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry with D2 background correction. To test the analytical methods dogfish muscle standard reference material (DORM-2 from the National Research Council of Canada) was analysed and accuracy and precision of the methods were determined. Average intake of Hg, As, Pb and Cd was estimated on the basis of statistical data on yearly seafood consumption in Croatia. It was compared with Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) of trace elements recommended by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives and Contaminants and discussed.
