Regulation of Photosynthesis in Algae Under Metal Stress
Heavy metals (HMs) are one of the most persistent pollutants in aquatic environments having harmful effect on algal metabolism, particularly photosynthesis. Prokaryotic and variety of eukaryotic algae respond differently to HMs depending on the specific features of their photosynthetic apparatus as well as the nature and concentration of HMs. Metal ions affect photosynthetic pigments, various photosynthetic enzymes and photosynthetic electron transport chain leading to the decrease in photosynthetic efficiency. In response, both, prokaryotic and eukaryotic algae, are equipped with enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant defence systems to neutralize HM toxicity. In the present chapter, mechanism of HM toxicity towards photosynthesis in prokaryotic and eukaryotic algae will be addressed.
