A comparison of the phraseological description of the emotion of anger in Croatian and Hungarian

Different lexicological units can describe human emotions. Idioms, as one of those units, particularly stand out because they conceptualise emotions with certain metonymic and metaphoric transferences of meaning as well as with conceptual metaphors. The metaphorical background for expressing emotions is based on the physical reaction that a certain emotion provokes in an individual. Due to its strong physical and psychical manifestations, which often result in the disabling of normal body functioning, the emotion of anger is the research subject of this paper. The aim of this analysis is to show how anger is described in Croatian and Hungarian phraseology, and which psychological and physiological factors of anger metaphorically motivated the idiomatic background and the meaning of the selected idioms. On the basis of cognitive models of anger proposed by G. Lakoff and Z. Kövecses, idioms showing different degrees of anger are analysed, as well as their causes and consequences. The aim is also to show the similarities and differences between Croatian and Hungarian idioms describing the concept of anger from the perspective of a contrastive point of view, with the assumption that the similarities will prevail due to the universal manifestations of anger, independent of cultural specifics in general.
