Substances Abuse among Medical Students University of Zagreb
Introduction and objective: Student population are at increased risk of substances abuse. The aim of this study was to determine prevalence of consumption tobacco, alcohol and experimenting with psychoactive drugs among first year students of the Medical School University of Zagreb. Subjects and Methods: The subjects in the study were 304 first year students, 181 (59.5%) females, in academic year 2015/2016. Data were obtained by anonymous questionnaire. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results: Out of total number, daily smoked 11.0% of females and 10.6% males, and occasionally 16.6% of females and 11.4% of males. Age of first cigarette consumption for the highest percentage of females was 17 years (17.7%), and for males 16 years (17.1%). The highest percentages of female and male students reported consumption of first alcoholic drink at the age of 15-16 years (49.7% and 39.0%). Binge drinking prevalence was 72.4%, significantly higher in males (79.7% vs.67.4%, p = 0.019). The frequency of binge drinking for the highest percentage of female and male students was six or more times in the past year (36.9% and 37.8%). Experience with psychoactive drugs reported 22.1% females and 33.3% males, and for more than 90% of them it was marijuana. Conclusion: Results showed low prevalence of daily smoking among medical students, and high prevalence of binge drinking, especially in male students. Every third male and almost every fourth female students tried marijuana. Results indicate the need of intervention programs to reduce alcohol abuse and experimentation with illegal drugs among medical students.
